Let be Honest Mamas : Flu Season

Its been a minute since I participated with the other beautiful ladies of the Lets be Honest Mamas group. I am LOVING these questions Kacie  came up with about flu season. We all do something different and I think its fun to learn new ways to help our bodies do what they were created to do. When you’re done reading my answers to these five questions head on over to the other ladies involved in this months post. All their links are at the bottom of this post.

Nobody wants their child to catch the cold or flu. Do you have any tips or tricks for preventing the flu from hitting your house?

I thieves everything. Haha. If you don’t know what thieves is please let me humor you for a moment. Back in the 1500’s grave robbers wore it to keep the stench and decaying bodies from making them sick. So if it can keep them from getting sick imma thieves my whole house. Haha. In all honesty though I really do use thieves EVERYDAY. I use Young Livings Thieves Concentrate to make my own household cleaner, and even to clean little mans toys. I also use the oil to help keep our immune systems up. (If you’re interested in getting thieves concentrate to make your own cleaner I am putting my contact info at bottom of post. comes out to .81c/bottle VS. toxic cleaners (i.e. clorox/lysol at $2.99/bottle)

I personally take Elderberry Syrup when the flu is going around. Its pretty much magic. You can make your own or buy it from the store.

I have a special little rollerbottle concoction that is pure magic. The last time I was sick was in 2016. So let that be the proof. Its a magic rollerbottle with oregano, frankincense, lavender, lemon, and thieves. I roll it on my feet, spine, and neck/throat every couple hours when there are cold/flus going around. I have yet to get sick. Soooooo WINNING.

Some parents rush their children to the doctor at the first sign of being sick or injured, while others choose to take care of the situation at home. Which category do you fall into and when do you know it’s time to see a doctor?

Going to the doctor for us only occurs in extreme medical emergencies. Im talking life or death. Our bodies know how to heal themselves and if we do a good job at helping keep our immune system up our bodies can typically do the work needed to heal. We just have a responsibility to take care of our bodies. We live in world where we want instant change but sometimes we need to just let our bodies do the work even if that means waiting extra long.

What are some natural remedies that you use to help your child feel better when he/she comes down with the flu/cold.

Little man has yet to come down with a cold since he was a couple months old. I like to think its my oily usage in our house. We are also fairly strict with our diet to keep our immune system working at capacity. We limit our dairy use (if any) along with sugar. A lot of people eat a lot of sugar during winter months which will CRASH your immune system. I get flack for not giving my son sugary foods, but I am okay with that. Knowing I am keeping his body healthy is whats most important to me.

Are you an advocate for the flu vaccine or do you choose to skip it? Why?

We choose not to get the flu vaccine. Just my personal beliefs.

For solidarity, share your worse flu story. Have you been thrown up on? Did one flu bug cycle through your entire family causing you to have weeks of taking of a sick child (or husband)? Let all the moms reading this know they’re not alone in the struggles of taking care of sick children.

I don’t have any crazy sick stories. Thank you Jesus. The worst sickness has been without kiddos always at thanksgiving. Go figure. haha. So heres to thieves, elderberry preventing it all. Okay, okay not all. But a lot. haha.

The only natural deodorant I use

When I decided to switch over my deodorant to a natural one I will admit I was nervous. When my mom was diagnosed with cancer (and eventually passed away) one of the first things I learned about was our bodies need to rid itself of toxins and how most deodorants prevented us from sweating.

Traditional antiperspirants contain aluminum which blocks pores, thereby preventing toxins from leaving the body. Some scientists have suggested that this may be a risk factor in the development of breast cancer. Random fact tidbit. Most people put 168 chemicals in their body every day. EVERYDAY! Yikes.

However being a woman I really didn’t wanna be known as that hippie with pit stains and smelly armpits. I may be from the PNW but it wasn’t a stigma I wanted my name associated with. I knew there had to be something out there that didn’t burn your pits like a lot the the natural ones do. Sidetone, its because of the baking soda in it. So steer clear of baking soda deodorants if you don’t want that. There are ways around it but lets be honest I don’t have time for an extra step. I wanna put on my deodorant and go.

Enter Kaia Natural Charcoal deodorant. If you go on their website this is one of the first things they talk about “Creating natural and minimalist products that benefit busy people is second nature to kaia naturals.” They are my kinda people.

The first thing I loved was of course the packaging. Made my neutral heart happy. Second was the smell. Can I be honest? I don’t think I have ever found a deodorant I have loved the smell of. They are all so artificial and either to girly, or just not my jam. The takesumi detox Kaia deodorant that I use is Lime + Mint. Perfectly refreshing and super light.

I took their 30 day challenge and I kid you not, this is my favorite deodorant to use. I will not go back to the other brands. I don’t have any odor, and I can trust what I am putting on my body is safe. So back to the 30 day detox challenge. Here is what you can expect.

I honestly was super nervous I would STANK. Either my friends were lying to me or my body did a great job of not embarrassing me. haha. I only had one day where I noticed a not friendly odor but I just reapplied deodorant and seemed to lessen.

You’ll notice the deodorant is gray. Honestly I was a little worried. I was definitely that person that emailed customer service and asked if it was going to stain my clothes or get on my clothes. They assured me it wasn’t a silly question and that it wouldn’t. Guess what? It doesn’t. It goes on almost clear like and I haven’t had any issues with staining.

So how does it work? Well the activated charcoal helps fight the odor causing bacteria meaning I stay smelling good AND the charcoal acts like a magnet to draw out the bacteria and toxins.

Since partnering with Kaia Naturals they are offering all my readers a 15% off discount. So get on it! Just type in “kymberlyjanelle” at checkout to get your discount.

Discount available until October 31st!

My favorite skin care product

I have been slowly working on switching out all the products we use for ‘clean’ products. If you haven’t downloaded the Think Dirty App I HIGHLY suggest doing so. Skincare has been something I have been slower to change over as I am super simple and honestly its hard for me to actually commit to a regimen. Insert SkinKC skin care line. Stephanie Skin KC is extremely knowledgable and truly LOVES what she does. Stephanie has created each of the products so if you are local to KC pop in the store and pick her brain about your skin needs. She will definitely help you out.

Skin KC prides themselves on having a natural organic skin care line. The Skin KC products are made safely, with non-toxic, non-synthetic, anti-aging, exfoliating, cruelty free and vegetarian ingredients, contains free-radical ingredients, age-fighting antioxidants, natural anti-inflammatory nutrients, organic, all-natural ingredients, premium essential oils, powerful antioxidants, nourishing & organic, nut, seed, and fruit oils. She uses essential oils, so you know I was going to love them 😉

This Anti-Aging Serum has become my FAVORITE skincare product. While my skin is extremely dry I was nervous the oil would make my skin oily or breakout. It does no such thing. Instead the anti-aging serum adds a glowy ageless look to my skin that I have been dreaming of.
Seriously, this is the first time I actually use a skincare product religiously.  Best part? Its under $35!

The next product I got was the apricot clay mask that can also be used as a scrub. We she told me they had dual uses I knew this was going to be my friend! Less products cluttering my bathroom drawers. This clay mask through is such a winner.

My favorite young living oils | May Favorites

I thought I would start a little series on my blog each month where I will feature my favorite oils for that month.

Oils can be intimidating I know. Where do you start? What oils do you need first? Should you purchase a starter kit first? So many questions and I want to take time each month to address all of these questions for you. Yes, getting the starter kit is absolutely the smartest way to go for what you get in it (we will talk more about that next month:). Today I wanna chat about 4 oils that are not in the starter kit that we are using EVERY DAY.

This months favorite oils are: Peace + Calming, Orange, Valor, and Grounding.

First up is GROUNDING oil. Grounding oil is the oil I have talked about the most this month if you follow me on instagram. We have been dealing with ALOT of overwhelming anxious feelings and grounding is helping stop those emotions in their tracks. I personally just take a whiff and find myself becoming a little more centered.

I have so many friends with children on the autism spectrum that have story after story about how this oil has helped stop their tantrums and fits with just smelling it. You can apply this oil topically or just smell it.

Toddlers + tantrums are another reason you will want this oil.

Grounding oil has : Abies concolor† (White fir) branch/leaf/wood oil, Picea mariana† (Black spruce) leaf oil, Cananga odorata† (Ylang ylang) flower oil, Pinus sylvestris† (Pine) leaf oil, Cedrus atlantica† (Cedarwood) bark oil, Angelica archangelica† (Angelica) root oil, Juniperus osteosperma† (Juniper) oil

For under $20 this oil is a must have for any mama

Next up is VALOR. My husband has used this daily for the past couple years. We nicknamed it “courage in a bottle”. It is that extra confidence boost that you need going into work, or an interview. Its just the perfect way to get yourself in a positive mindset as you start the day. Its a very uplifting smell. My husband typically goes through a bottle a year.

Valor has: Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Picea mariana † (Black spruce) leaf oil, Cinnamomum camphora † (Camphor) wood oil, Tanacetum annuum † (Blue tansy) flower oil, Boswellia carterii † (Frankincense) oil, Pelargonium graveolens † (Geranium) flower oil

Valor is $39.75 wholesale

Orange oil is so stinking affordable at $10.75 and its the only thing that works as a teeth whitener on my teeth and doesn’t hurt them. I have pretty sensitive teeth and I cannot use any kind of teeth whitener strips. So orange oil is what I have been using daily. I use it once in afternoon and once at night.

Peace & Calming was the oil that got us hooked on young living oils 3 years ago. The first time I used it I slept better than I had slept in over 10+ years. I actually freaked me out I slept so soundly. We now use it every night. We just apply drop to our feet and rub our feet together. I am not a bad sleeper, I just have a hard time turning off my brain at night. I typically scroll through my phone and wait till I get sleepy. So instead of doing that I put on peace & calming as I am starting bedtime routine. Put my phone on my nightstand and am off to sleep.

Peace & Calming blend has: Citrus reticulata† (Tangerine) peel oil, Citrus aurantium dulcis† (Orange) peel oil, Cananga odorata† (Ylang ylang) flower oil, Pogostemon cablin† (Patchouli) oil, Tanacetum annuum† (Blue tansy) oil

Peace & Calming is $34.75 wholesale

This oil is EXTREMELY popular and is limited to ONE bottle per month per customer.

If you’ve been following my blog you will have noticed I just started selling Young Living oils. I have been using them for 3+ years though. Now that we are selling them I am able to get hundreds of dollars of free oils each month and get a paycheck. WOHOO. Honestly, knowing I am able to help keep our household a little less toxic free feels amazing. We are currently in process of switching out all our cleaners, laundry detergents and soaps to young living products.

If you’re interested in getting your oils for free each month as well send me at email at: kymberlyjanelle@gmail.com and lets chat.

If you’re interested in purchasing a starter kit you can do so HERE. Just make sure you select member so you can get wholesale pricing. Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions you have. This month (May) when you purchase your starter kit you get a FREE tangerine oil AND I’ll pay for your shipping.

Living Simply & Spring Cleaning

Making Thieves Cleaner | Is thieves cheaper than store brand cleaner?

Thieves was the third oil we got when we first started out with Young Living oils a couple years ago and I refuse to be out of it. It’s one of my favorite smells. To me its like christmas. So when I learned they had a thieves household cleaner solution I knew I had to try it out. Since having our little guy I am working to rid our house from as many toxins as possible. I have always hated the strong chemical smell from our normal household cleaner so an opportunity to ditch it made me excited. My only concern was the price.

I have always been frugal and would typically get most of our household cleaners for $1 or under. Even though they retail for $2.99. So I wanted to see if how thieves compared price point wise to my frugal ways.

We would typically get Clorox spray which was $2.99 at Target for a 32 oz bottle.

Thieves is $28.95 (or $22 if you’re a member;) for a 14.4 fl oz bottle.

You use a capful of solution and 2-3 cups of water to make one bottle. Now to make a bottle equivalent to 32oz you would need to do 2 capfuls of Thieves cleaner.

There are 60-65 capfuls of thieves cleaner according to Young Living.

So……

I could make thirty 32oz bottles of thieves cleaner for $24.34 (this includes tax)

VS

$89.70 for thirty bottles of clorox cleaner.

image1

Whats that break down to per bottle? (Using  member prices $22)

Thieves cleaner (32oz bottle comparison) $.81 per bottle

VS

Clorox cleaner (32 oz bottle) $3.25 (thats including tax)

Even cheaper than my couponing ways you guys! You just can’t beat that. And possibly the best part, to store thirty 32oz bottles worth of cleaner takes up space in one bottle. Storying thirty clorox bottles? Um, no thanks.

Ready to make the switch?

Comment or email me and kymberlyjanelle@gmail.com to order your thieves cleaner.

What to do when cancer strikes your family again and again

I am tired. Emotionally exhausted. I just found out another family member has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently in the hospital. Mind you this family member has already had their bought with cancer several decades ago and now another cancer has reared its ugly head in their life.

I am tired of cancer. Between cancer and disease my mom and both my dads parents passed away in last couple years and now both my moms parents have been diagnosed. The only family members who have not been diagnosed with cancer are me, my brother, my dad, cousins, and two uncles. Everyone else has been diagnosed with cancer or died from it. I am sick and tired of it staking its ‘claim’ on my family life.

When I think about the havoc it has wrecked on my families life while it pains me to the core I find a renewed sense of purpose in my life. A reminder to grab life by the horns and to just GO. To let go of the fears that have hindered me and to chase after what I have always wanted because I really don’t know when my time is and I am not about to have a list of “I wish I would have’s” on my death bed.

Here is to loving deeper, letting go quicker, and laughing just a little bit louder.

Has your family had several members diagnosed or die from cancer? Would love to hear what helped you cope.

Dealing with Pregnancy Weight Gain

Oh pregnancy weight gain. I know this topic can be touchy. Everyones experience is different. Some have to work to gain anything, while others seem to put it on like its their job even with keeping a clean diet and working out. Weight gain is not only natural in pregnancy it’s apart of the journey. For so many of us women most of our lives we are focused on keeping the scale around certain numbers. Then when we become pregnant and everything is turned upside down and we now NEED to be gaining weight for the baby to be healthy. It is completely new territory.

For me I didn’t gain a single pound my first trimester. Though my appetite was ferocious I devoured carbs like it was my job. (I was also walking 3hrs a day, 3-5 days a week). Second trimester though work slowed down and the walking went down to 0 days a week.  With it getting cold outside, no gym membership and the holidays (food, food, and more food ALL THE TIME) the weight had no where to go but stick to me.

I discovered since becoming pregnant when I didn’t make healthy/clean choices the weight stuck to me like a leach. I instantly gained weight quicker than pre-pregnancy. My weight could go up or down 3-5 lbs easy in a days time! For someone like myself who has been underweight most of my life (that is just my body type- no need to go tell me to eat a cheeseburger) to all of a sudden have the scale jumping up was terrifying. I remember at the beginning of my second trimester I had a really hard time with checking my weight. I couldn’t believe how quickly I was gaining weight. I then remembered I hadn’t been working out and I was still eating whatever I wanted. That is just what happens when you stop your physical activity. Eventually I let go of needing to check the scale daily.

Until today.

My jaw almost dropped. I was not expecting to have gained as much as I had. To be honest with you I expected to be at this weight the day I gave birth to baby rubeo. Adios perfect pregnancy plan. (of which I have learned there is no such thing;)

Heres the facts though, while I workout 3-5 times a week at the gym I have been eating ice cream and dessert every single night. Wish I could say I skipped a night or two but its probably not true. Having a sweet tooth has always been my crutch. So its probably a miracle that I haven’t gained even more.  However, those were the clean hard facts. I had gotten myself to where I was on the scale. It wasn’t that I had been eating clean and working out and still gaining weight. I was overeating with sugar and it’s only natural to gain weight when you overeat.

So where do I go from here and what advice do I have for pregnant mamas?

Take one day at a time. That is all you can do and there is a lot of power in that. Take today by the horns and live it well. Tomorrow will come in due time.

If necessary write down what you are eating. Not for the sake of being a calorie nazi- I simply forget most days that I have already had sugar. Then after I eat it I realize I’ve already had more than my fill. So tracking my food intake has nothing to do with calories and everything to do with pregnancy brain

Leave the scale alone. You’ll be weighed every 4 weeks anyways. If you wanna see what it says then you can. I found since being pregnant my weight can fluctuate up to 5 lbs in one day. If you are use to tracking your weight you will probably go crazy watching the numbers go up and down each day/week.

Be honest with yourself. Journal your feelings. There are probably a lot jumbled around in there. Sort them out with journaling, friends, and your partner. I have found this to be my saving grace. Sometimes I just need to say outloud to someone what I am feeling and then I can just move on.

Love yourself. What is happening in your body is iNCREDIBLE. It blows my mind every time I feel little man kicking around. There is a HUMAN BODY in me!!!! WOW!!

Don’t take what others say to heart. Well that negative stuff anyways. Like the cashier at target the other day who asked if I was nearing the end. Nope I laughed. Still have four months to go.

Stay active. This has kept me sane and feeling strong. Since January I go to the gym 3-5 days a week for 45 minutes of cardio and then I do 1-3 days a week I do LIGHT weights at home. The endorphins from working out have helped me out so much!

So now that I’ve stepped on the scale and know the number that this body is carrying what am I going to do? Take my own advice of course. Keeping track of my sweets intake daily/weekly, *try* to stop eating by 8pm cause thats when the real damage is done, and have healthy snacks readily available. Most of the time when I eat sweets though I am not even hungry. It’s boredom eating. So I’ve got to have a talk with myself about that 😉 Maybe its time for a nighttime hobby other than eat the entire pint of Ben & Jerrys Ice cream.

So for you mamas who have been through this I would love to know. What helped keep you on track staying away from your guilty pleasures?
